Illness in Curanderismo is conceptualized as a result of an organism being in a state of disequillibrum. Illness can be caused by trauma, a lack of harmony in relationships and through disequillibrium with Spirit, among other causes. Her doctoral work included research on Curanderismo and Traumatology, which took her to rural, urban and jungle settings in central and southern Mexico.

In addition to her doctoral degree, Dr. Mohr-Almeida has completed an apprenticeship with an elder in Curanderismo and studied with healers from Mexico and Central America. Dr. Mohr-Almeida’s psychotherapeutic theory work has been strongly influenced by Carl Jung, Robert A. Johnson and Clarissa Pinkola Estes, among others. She also has degrees in English, Journalism, Elementary Education, a Master's Degree in Psychology. She is also Spanish-English bilingual in all modalities of communication.
